The 8th annual carboard boat races at Lindy’s Landing in Wauconda proved that cardboard can indeed make functional boat—as long as its designers knew what they were doing.
The winners designed a sleek short canoe-style boat called The Silver Bullet, and paddled their way to victory.
Others opted for style and theming instead of functionality and paid the price in the standings. Some of the more elaborate boat projects like the Titanic and the Blues Brothers boat didn’t make it past the starting line, while others like the Banana Boat and the Dad’s Root Beer managed to win at least one heat each.
The boats that did sink violated one of the cardinal rules of boat-building, the width must be more than the height.
The event took place Saturday, Sept. 5 and lasted all afternoon, while spectators watched from the bleachers set up on the beach.
